A Prairie Muffin Home Companion

One difficulty when trying to use humor against religious extremism of various kinds is that if you don’t find the original statements of extremists outrageously funny already, there’s no way you’re going to laugh at a parody. Sometimes there’s just no where else more ridiculous for a parodist to go.

This was my reaction to reading Slacktivist’s post on “Prairie Muffins”, women who wholeheartedly embrace a life of wholesome submission to their husbands and to their church. If ever you want to gaze across a cultural divide, it seems you never have to look too far when the Web is there at your fingertips. I can’t imagine such a narrow role allows these folks to be more than a small fraction of who they really are, but maybe I’m just imposing my own views. Whatever makes your muffin rise, girl. It’s America; we can live how we choose. Still, I can’t help but think that folks who don’t think it’s appropriate for their girls to go to college are shooting themselves in the foot culturally and economically. And I imagine there are more than a few people in that muffin world who feel trapped and hemmed in by it. But perhaps that’s why God invented San Francisco, New York, Seattle, and other cesspools of godless, urban cosmopolitanism. Refugees from the prairie will always have someplace to go (if they can afford the outrageous rent).

Look at it this way. Eventually their lack of economic clout will translate to an inability to enforce their own cultural norms - breeding themselves out of the gene pool altogether.

Procrastinate enough and a problem solves itself.

Well, unfortunately I don't think I can rely on demographic shifts to save me from this kind of Christianity. Well educated secular liberals have a pretty low reproductive rate, I think. We have to get better at getting all people to breed responsibly, and we have to get better at convincing others that our way of looking at things is a good one.
