Dumbest D&D group ever: "Head of Vecna"

If you like hearing stories about players in Dungeons & Dragons doing stupid things, it's pretty hard to beat this "Head of Vecna" story. True D&D geeks will be able to tell where this is going just from the title. HT: Mad Latinist.

Reading around further, I discovered this tale has been alluded to more than once. Apparently the "Head of Vecna" makes a cameo in the module "Die Vecna, Die!" (no one who speaks German could be evil).

Also, to quote Wikipedia:

In the 1999 CRPG Planescape: Torment, Fall-From-Grace (a puritan succubus) asks Morte (a disembodied floating skull) "What are you?", to which Morte replies "Me? I'm the head of Vecna." A similar conversation between the two involves Morte saying "It's a long story involving the head of Vecna. I don't want to talk about it." Grace responds with an amused "That was you?"

I've heard this story a while back. Apparently it was the prize of some tournament.

However, it is -so- good that I'm beginning to suspect it's an urban legend. Does anyone know anyone where this fabled tournament happened?

Would not at all be surprised if this was an urban legend.

Well, the writer of the linked post claims to have been the original DM. Not that that proves it really happened, but if you want to look for an origin, that would be the best place to start.
