Sullivan gives backhanded Lamont endorsement

OK, this is a bit convoluted. Sullivan would support Lieberman himself if he were a Democrat, but he's not, but he thinks Democrats should be voicing opposition to the Bush administration, which Lieberman isn't, so "it's silly to believe it's nuts for Dems to choose the other guy.", even though Sullivan wouldn't do so himself:
But I can understand those Democrats who do not think it is their role next week to give Bush their party's cover for his war-mismanagement. I'd still back him [Lieberman] myself; but it's silly to believe it's nuts for Dems to choose the other guy.
Um, OK. I can sort of see the argument here: If Lieberman is less critical of the president than many Republicans (and Sullivan himself), it makes sense that Democrats wouldn't like him. But then why does Sullivan like him? Many of Sullivan's objections to Bush policies (torture, expansion of executive power, bad war management, anti gay-marriage stance) are the very policies Lieberman has been defending.

He also talks about Lieberman angling to replace Rumsfeld. That would probably be an improvement, but it seems to me that Joementum has drunk the "Iraq is going well" Kool-Aid almost as much as Rummy (Though he's not talking about Iraq on the campaign trail):
My guess is that he's still lobbying hard to replace Rumsfeld later this year and, by all accounts, probably will. Any replacement for Rumsfeld can only help us win this war, and Lieberman's ethical compass, unlike Rumsfeld's, would perhaps mitigate some of the depravity enabled by Captain Queeg.
"and, by all accounts, probably will." I didn't know this. I wonder where Sullivan got this.
